Not that long ago, in a community not too far away, a community newspaper broke boundaries and box office records with a novel event.

The Prince George Citizen has been a leader in creating events in B.C.’s northern capital for several years. But they have taken the concept to a new level with Northern FanCon.

The inaugural event, held in May 2015, saw more than 5,600 tickets sold with attendees coming from as far away as Vancouver and Calgary to meet celebrities including Star Trek legend William Shatner, Giancarlo Esposito (Breaking Bad), Tia Carrere (Relic Hunter), John de Lancie (Star Trek: The Next Generation), Isaiah Mustafa (the “Old Spice Guy”).

The 2016 event was even bigger, featuring LeVar Burton and Denise Crosby (Geordi LaForge and Tasha Yar from Star Trek: The Next Generation), Robert Duncan McNeill and Garrett Wang (Tom Paris and Harry Kim from Star Trek: Voyager) and Jason Mewes (Jay and Silent Bob). Even better, the attendees themselves are part of the attraction, with the tremendous growth of Cosplay (costumer play).

Between ticket sales, autograph sales and sponsorship, the event is bringing in more than $300,000 in revenue per year, connecting with a whole new audience not typically associated with community newspapers, and providing unique and lucrative marketing opportunities for sponsors.
