Estevan Mercury Publications is looking for a diligent, hard-working and talented journalist to join our two award-winning weekly newspapers, as well as to contribute to our website.
The Estevan Mercury was established in 1903, and is one of Saskatchewan’s oldest and most respected weekly newspapers. This broadsheet paper is published every Wednesday, and is distributed to all residences in Estevan and to some rural homes. Southeast Lifestyles is a tabloid paper delivered on Fridays to all homes in Estevan and to numerous rural communities in the southeast region.
Both papers are well known for the diversity of their reporting.
Our website is updated with breaking news several times per day, and consistently ranks among the most-viewed weekly newspaper websites in Saskatchewan. Most of the copy from each paper is posted to our website, and there are stories exclusive to the website as well.
Between the Mercury, Lifestyles and our website, we offer plenty of opportunities for you to showcase your skills at reporting, writing, telling stories, taking photos and even posting videos.
The successful applicant will contribute 10-15 stories per week between the two papers and the website. This person will be able to find stories in the community and accept assignments from the editor, interview sources, take photos, cover breaking news and supply content for special sections.
Our reporters will also have a keen interest in using multiple social media platforms to inform and engage our communities.
Estevan is Saskatchewan’s Energy City and Canada’s Sunshine Capital. This vibrant community of 12,500 people in southeast Saskatchewan offers plenty to cover, including sports, education, healthcare, politics, law enforcement, arts and culture and much more. There will be an emphasis on sports reporting with this position.
We are also open to your ideas to enhance the experience of our editorial staff, and to improve our papers and our website.
This city also has plenty of sports, recreation, culture and outdoor lifestyle opportunities. Camping, boating, fishing and much more are readily available in our backyard.
Estevan Mercury Publications is owned by the Glacier Media Corp., and is part of the Prairie Newspaper Group.
We offer a full benefits package after three months of employment.
- A post-secondary journalism diploma or degree (or equivalent);
