Job Purpose:

We have four (4) available positions

  1. Operations Interns (2 positions)
  2. Operations and Irrigation Intern
  3. Irrigation Intern

Reporting to the Operations and Events Coordinator, the Discovery Farm Irrigation and Operations Intern, you will be responsible to assist Discovery Farm with irrigation, general farm hand duties, events including Ag in Motion, and assist in building and maintaining our land and facilities. The Irrigation and Operations Intern will support all facets of irrigation and operations. It is important to note that in this role you will be called upon to complete a variety of tasks.

Duties and Responsibilities:

Irrigation

  • Set up irrigation systems for clients and dismantle as needed  
  • Create irrigation systems as needed
  • Take irrigation water orders and book with supplier  
  • Check and maintain water systems (pumps, tanks, etc.) 
  • Fix hose leaks and replace pieces of the irrigation system as needed  
  • Create and update excel sheet with orders, customers, etc.   
  • Track time spent on each plot
  • Track water usage, application date and time of each watering
  • Pump water from holding areas to be used on plots
  • Haul potable water from Langham
  • Conduct minor maintenance on water pumps (filling with fuel, ensuring oil level is good, cleaning spark plugs)
  • Move water tanks from storage to crop plots
  • Remove water tanks from plots prior to Ag in Motion
  • Provide updates to the crop plot clients 
  • Create an end of year watering summary to send to each client 
  • Monitor crop plots for damage caused by gophers
  • Additional tasks as needed

Operations

  • Maintain clean and organized site and facilities   
  • Ensure execution of day-to-day plans occur  
  • Ensures equipment maintenance forms are filled out daily and equipment problems are reported to supervisor   
  • Assist with event preparation, set up, and tear down   
  • Support with all onsite events including Ag in Motion
  • Preparation and daily maintenance of all equipment and machinery  
  • Operation of farm and other machinery including telehandlers, man-lifts, tractors, zero-turn mowers, weed whippers, and basic woodworking tools    
  • Waste collection and disposal
  • Sign installation
  • Conduct inventory of all items on site
  • City runs to pick up required materials and supplies 
  • Woodworking as needed
  • Painting as needed 
  • Pressure washing of equipment, vehicles, and buildings 
  • Cleaning of all buildings – sweeping, mopping, vacuuming, dusting
  • Interior detailing of all equipment and vehicles 
  • Monthly fire extinguisher checks 
  • Pest control as needed 
  • Staking and measuring out the site for events 
  • Additional tasks as needed

Qualifications:

  • This position will be required to work flexible hours during peak season and events  
  • Training will be required on specific equipment, onsite training will be provided
  • Valid Driver’s License  
  • Valid CPR/First Aid Certificate an asset 
  • Steel toed work boots are required 
  • Must be able to lift heavy objects
